A detailed review of Host Gator

A Detailed Review of HostGator

HostGator is one of the most popular hosting providers online today.

The pricing is affordable, the service is great, and the features vast. BlueHost is certainly a competitor.

But, before you head over to the HostGator site though, you need to know the good and bad to make a decision – if it’s the right hosting provider for you.

Find out in our review of HostGator.

A Detailed Review of HostGatorHostGator Features

HostGator provides flexibility and unrestricted access to its hosting services. Many of the services are unlimited such as:

  • number of domains and subdomains you can have
  • bandwidth
  • disk space

On the dashboard of HostGator, you have access to a sitebuilder with 4,500 website templates, shopping carts for those of you with ecommerce websites, and easy one click installs for WordPress users.

You can also easily access your website’s email account or set up forwarding to an alternative email program. HostGator even includes a program called Spam Assassin, which attacks spam emails and blocks them from entering your inbox.

To top all of these features, with the business account you can get a toll free number, a dedicated IP address and a private SSL. These features are perfect for your start up or growing your business.

Customer Service

HostGator provides customer service around the clock every single day of the year by email, phone, and chat on the site.

While phone can be a good way to get your questions answered quickly, the chat allows you to multitask while the representative works to correct any issues on your site. The representatives are knowledgeable, courteous and often go beyond the scope of hosting to help customers with their site.

Pricing

HostGator is always holding a special, so if you catch them on a day that their packages are regular price, just wait a day or two. They have three packages:

  1. Hatchling Plan
  2. Baby Plan
  3. Business Plan

The hatchling plan is best for those who are just starting out. You can only have one domain. You still get the unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth though. You also receive a shared SSL certificate.

The baby plan is the next step up for business owners. It provides unlimited domains, disk space and bandwidth along with a shared SSL certificate.

The business plan is for the business owner who is ready to grow their business to new heights. It provides unlimited domains, disk space, and bandwidth. It also offers free private SSL, IP and a toll free number.

Pricing depends on how you want to pay for your package. You can save money by paying 1, 2, or 3 years in advance. You can also choose to pay monthly.

HostGator Complaints

Reviews of HostGator reveal that some users are frustrated over the wait time for technical assistance on chat. One user said he had to wait 30 minutes. Other users report that the support they received from the representative they chatted with online didn’t help them.

Another complaint has to do with a server problem. HostGator guarantees 99.9% up time, but a user says that after routine maintenance on the server his site was on, he had nothing but problems with it being down. He asked for his site to be switched to another server, but it was never switched.

One person said that the dashboard is not as easy to use as some other hosting providers. They said that it can take some time to get used to the set up with all the features available.

So it seems there are some complaints, but it should be remembered that there are very few, and every product/service has its issues or problems on occasion.

Deciding on a Hosting Service

HostGator is one of many hosting services. The pricing isn’t the lowest, and they do deal with technical difficulties from time to time.

You’ll likely find the same using other hosting services, but for the price, you may feel as though it’s not worth it. Many people are satisfied with their services, so you never know if it will end up satisfying you until you try it.

They offer a 45 day money back guarantee. That way if you don’t like it, you can get your money back and move on to another hosting service.

  1. It seems currently there are support resource issues with HostGator. I asked for an update on a ticket open since Dec 23rd and got the answer to be patience as there are not enough people available to work my case and the number of cases is higher as normal. Also no date could be given, unacceptable.

  2. How is that even a review?

More customers are very unsatified with hostgator now!
You can easily check it in social media.
Wesites are always offline, we get stupid errors due to bad servers and it takes forever to reach to support!

The price is not the lowest! New customers are attracted with cheap offer, whereas the one who had be paying for years get nothing but troubles!

You have to wait at least 30 minutes to get someone in the live chat, then add another hour, to get your problem unsolve with website offline far too often to be acceptable!

Hostgator was good once, but now it’s a NIGHTMARE!

    Can’t wait to change hosting.

    1. thanks for sharing your experience. We have a few sites on our HostGator account and have not experienced any outages. I wonder if this was something isolated for some servers. Usually, our support tickets area almost always resolved on the first attempt. Now I’ll have to keep an eye on them.

  3. I think Hostgator’s support is based around what products you have. I’ve noticed that those with dedicated servers get top priority with support. Anyone on a share $100 a year service needs to get in line. People can complain all they want but you get what you pay for in life. They are far better than most.

    1. WordPress Dude – Thanks for your input and perspective. That’s some very sound advice and something people should keep in mind no matter what service provider they are considering.
